Opening of a new eye clinic offering cataract surgery in Oldham

A new eye clinic, specializing in NHS cataract surgery, has opened in Oldham and it is hoped the facility will reduce waiting times for operations in the area.

SpaMedica has opened a new facility on Sheepfoot Lane, close to the Royal Oldham Hospital, and is looking to provide appointments for patients requiring treatment within four weeks.

The cataract surgery provider is headquartered in Bolton and has been offering the service for 14 years, with nearly 40 clinics in England.

Clinic Director Georgia Valentine said, “We look forward to welcoming cataract patients through our doors, and it’s great to hear great feedback from those who have already received first-line care. cataract class from our Oldham team.

“We are committed to helping reduce cataract surgery wait times, and not only can we offer appointments within two to four weeks.

“We also have a free transport service available for those who might otherwise struggle to access the help they need.”

In response to a social media post announcing the clinic’s opening, commenter Irene Richards said she and her husband had their cataract surgery at the clinic and described it as ‘amazing’ .

She also added that the hospital was a “great friendly place” with “lovely staff” and “great treatment”.

Cataracts are common in adults, with around 30% of adults over the age of 65 having a cataract that affects their vision and requires treatment.

Cataract surgery is the most common operation in the UK, with nearly 450,000 surgeries performed each year, according to the National Ophthalmology Database Audit 2017-18.

Ms Valentine said: “Cataracts can rob people of their quality of life and independence, but for most people it is a treatable condition and the procedure itself is quick and simple – don’t taking only 10 to 15 minutes.

“We know that any surgery can trigger anxiety and we pride ourselves on offering personal care, which even includes an on-hand service.”

Symptoms of cataracts include decreased clarity of vision that cannot be corrected by glasses, colors appearing faded or washed out, sensitivity to light, and frequent changing of prescriptions.

SpaMedica is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday.
